US: Food waste $18.2 billion profit opportunity for retailers

27 February 2018

The ReFED Retail Food Waste Action Guide finds that food waste represents an $18.2 billion opportunity for grocery retailers in the USA. The Guide is designed to support grocery retailers in developing and implementing food waste reduction strategies. On average, the value of wasted food in retail is equal to roughly double the profits from food sales. The Guide presents a set of proven prevention, recovery, and recycling solutions to prioritize and accelerate waste reduction activities. These include prevention solutions such as dynamic pricing, increasing food donations, ride-sharing platforms, chain-of-custody records and standardized date labelling (Press Release ReFED, 23 January 2018).
