Further processing paperboard weakens protection properties

27 January 2017

Further processing of package material based on paperboard greatly affects products' protection properties. The effects are mainly negative, but certain process stages can even improve materials' ability to prevent grease entering into package material. This was the finding of a recent doctoral dissertation by M.Sc. (Tech,) Sami-Seppo Ovaska. The results indicate that the grease resistance of package materials as a general rule weakened during sub-processes of further processing. On the other hand, heat exposure reduced the number of small holes formed during the drying phase of the coating process (News Item Lappeenranta University of Technology, 17 November 2017).
