NL: More waste collected separately by municipalities in 2017

28 August 2018

In 2017, 57% of household waste was collected separately, versus 49% in 2007. Especially more vegetable, fruit and garden waste (GFT) and packaging waste (PMD) was disposed of separately. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of new figures. On average, 495kg of waste was collected per person in 2017, 13% down on 2007. This comprised 362kg of small and 133kg of bulky household waste, a decrease of 13% and 11% respectively. In case of both waste flows, increasingly large quantities are collected separately and, as a result, do not end up as residual waste. In 2007, 0.6kg of packaging was collected per person, which increased to 15.4kg in 2017 (News Item CBS, 30 June 2018).
