New Portuguese law broadens foundation for EPR

30 January 2018

In 1997 and in harmony with EU directives, the Portuguese Government required extended producer responsibility (EPR) for 7 categories of products: packaging, tires, mineral oils, electrical and electronic equipment, vehicles, and batteries and accumulators.
A new decree-law (No. 152-D/2017) approved on December 11 broadens the previous laws establishing EPR for the seven product categories and facilitates the addition of “emerging” product categories. It defines new rules for the management of some wastes and introduces directive 2015/720/EU on lightweight plastic carrier bags into Portuguese law. It came into effect on 1 January 2018 (Recycling Laws International, 27 December 2017).
