New EU project BioBarr for bio-based food packaging materials

29 May 2017

A bioplastic developed by Bio-on will be at the centre of a new European project that aims to create new biodegradable food packaging materials in the coming years. The project BioBarr (New bio-based food packaging materials with enhanced barrier properties) has received funding under the EU Horizon 2020 programme and it will start on 1st June 2017. The project will focus on PHA biopolymers (polyhydroxyalkanoates). The researchers' objectives are to develop new bio-based and biodegradable food packaging materials, to improve and strengthen their barrier functionalities and to validate their application in real working environments within the food industry (Press Release Bio-on, 10 May 2017).
