Misleading claims on packaging of sugar-rich cereals

03 September 2018

The British Dental Association (BDA) has called for sweeping changes to food marketing and product formulation, as new research reveals the extent of misleading claims on sugar-rich cereals aimed at children.
The researchers found that the imagery used on packets depicts servings 3 times the size of manufacturers recommended portion sizes. They also found that the majority of products featured potentially misleading nutritional claims, designed to offer a 'halo effect' leaving consumers to consider them healthier than warranted, or ignore other warnings. An article about the research is published in the British Dental Journal (News Item Cardiff University, 2 August 2018).
