There have been quite a few new publications on printing recently. According to FINAT, EU digital label press installations overtook conventional press sales for the first time in 2017. Almost all printed material has to be finished and converted into a saleable item. Influence of packaging on consumer choices
The ISO Committee on consumer policy (ISO/COPOLCO) announced the publication of the revised version of the ISO/IEC Guide 41:2018. The guide provides general recommendations for determining the most suitable type of packaging.
Researchers at the Universidad de Zaragoza in Spain have found a correspondence between spiciness and pointy shapes. On a bag of nuts, a pointy fire icon is associated with spicy whereas a rounded fire icon is associated with roasted. An article (971 kB) about the research is published in Food Quality and Preference.
Light products are often presented in pale blue packaging. Not the best choice, PhD candidate Irene Tijssen of WUR discovered. Consumers associate pastel colours with health, but don’t find them as appealing as bright colours such as red or orange.
How can packaging help people to select healthier products? UMC Utrecht and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) have developed a virtual supermarket to study the effects of packaging and other factors on diet choices.

Sustainability and environment

New research from Paymentsense reveals over half (54%) of small UK retailers have seen sales of plastic packaged goods fall over the last six months. One of the reasons could be that plastic packaging has been getting a lot of media attention in the UK. According to research from ThoughtWorks, conscious consumption will replace the waste society as Britain is on the brink of a food revolution.
A survey (in Dutch, 3.34 MB) from Climate Neutral Group (in Dutch) and Motivaction shows that Dutch consumers have sustainable intentions but often their buying behaviour does not reflect this.
