German phone app for information about chemicals in products

29 May 2017

German residents can now use smart phones to get instant information on chemicals in the products they find in stores thanks to a new smart phone app unveiled by Germany's Federal Environment Agency - Umweltbundesamt (UBA). The app is called Scan4Chem.
Smart phone users can scan a product bar code and send the scanned code to the product manufacturer, requesting information on the chemicals it contains. Under the EU REACH regulation, the producer must provide the requested information to the consumer within 45 days. This way consumers can for example find out if a product contains one of the 173 substances of very high concern (Recycling Laws International, 12 May 2017).
