Cellulose nanofibrils in biobased multilayer films for food

27 February 2017

Researchers at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland evaluated a thin cellulose nanofibril (CNF) coating as a barrier layer in multilayer packaging films together with biobased polyethylenes.
CNF provided the films with an oxygen barrier suitable for both demanding food products and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). The MAP pouches made of these films retained their atmosphere and shape and protected ground hazelnuts from further oxidation for the storage time used in this study. However, irradiation impaired the oxygen barrier property, while the water vapor barrier property remained unaffected. An article about the research is published in the Journal of Applied Polymer Science.
