Recommendations for successful EU health food claims

Researchers have developed recommendations to help food companies successfully substantiate new health claims in the EU. A common framework for the use of health claims was established by the European regulation. However, its implementation, despite providing legal certainty to the use of authorized health claims, was found to be too complex and arduous. Examining past decisions, both favorable and unfavorable, by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and conducting interviews with specialists in the field, researchers identified a number of areas that those working in food and nutrition should consider when seeking to implement a new health claim (Nutrition Insight, 14 November 2017).
