10 years REACH: “Good for environment, needlessly complex”

03 July 2017

Ten years after the start of REACH, the European Regulation that lays down the requirements for chemical substances, 1794 substances have been registered in Belgium. According to a survey by Agoria, eighty percent of the technology companies thinks that REACH has contributed to a better environment.
However, they state that REACH has hardly or not at all lead to the replacement of substances of very high concern (SVHC); only 12 percent says that they have developed new products with other, safer substances. It costs a lot of money and paperwork to comply with the REACH Regulation, particularly since the communication requirements for SVHCs were made stricter (News Item Agoria, 1 June 2017).
