Food in Flanders: more production, less environmental impact

25 April 2017

The ‘Environmental Analysis Flemish Food Industry’ of the Flanders Environment, Nature and Energy Department (LNE) shows a positive environmental evolution in the food sector. The sector realised clear eco-efficiency improvements on all of the investigated indicators in spite of an increase in production of 30% between 2005 and 2014.
Particularly the 14% decrease in the use of water is very important for the sector. For energy and waste there is no absolute decrease, but there is a relative decrease considering the increase in production. The food sector is the largest industrial sector in Flanders. In 2014 the turnover was 38.1 billion euro (News Item LNE, 28 March 2017).
