UK: Scottish government programme includes deposit system

02 October 2017

The Scottish government has published its Programme for Government for the coming year. According to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, seizing the opportunities of the low carbon revolution, investing in future economic growth and improving the lives of young people will be central to the programme.
The government will support the circular economy and tackle climate change. The actions the government will take in the next year include developing a deposit return scheme for drinks containers for roll-out across Scotland and establishing an advisory group to consider fiscal and other measures to reduce waste and boost the circular economy – for example, a possible levy on single use coffee cups.
