Singapore investigates food waste at consumer level

14 December 2017

A household waste study commissioned by the National Environment Agency (NEA) Singapore has found that food waste accounted for about half of the waste disposed of by each Singapore household a day. Half of this food waste could have been prevented through actions such as not over-buying.
The amount of avoidable food waste is equivalent to each household throwing away a 2.5kg bag of rice every week. 27% of the households said that they had leftovers after a meal at least half of the time. About 24% often throw away spoilt or expired food, and the top 2 reasons for doing so were buying too much, and having food items hidden at the back of the fridge (News Release NEA, 3 December 2017).
