Romania: Draft law on reduction plastic bags sent to EC

30 October 2017

Romania has sent a draft law to the European Commission concerning reducing the consumption of plastic carrier bags. The standstill period ends on 12 January 2018. The draft legislation transposes the provisions of Directive (EU) 2015/720 amending Directive 94/62/EC as regards reducing the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags. The law will ban the placement on the national market of lightweight (with a wall thickness below 50 microns) and very lightweight (with a wall thickness below 15 microns) plastic carrier bags with a handle, as of 1 July 2018. As of 1 January 2019 the marketing of lightweight and very lightweight plastic carrier bags with a handle will also be banned.
