NL CBS: Environmental taxes bring in over 25 billion euro

12 September 2017

In 2016, the Government of the Netherlands collected over 25.3 euro in environmental taxes and levies. This is 3% more than in 2015. Households carry almost two thirds of the expenses. This is concluded based on new data from the CBS.
The government received 20.7 billion euro in environmental taxes and 4.6 billion euro in environmental levies in 2016. Environmental taxes are added to the public funds and are mainly connected to the possession and use of cars and energy use. Environmental levies are imposed to finance specific environmental measures. Examples of environmental levies are waste levy, sewage charges and wastewater levy (Press Release CBS, 14 August 2017).
