New chemical process makes production bioplastics easier

29 May 2018

Researchers from KU Leuven have found a cleaner and cheaper method for producing biodegradable plastic. The researchers are carrying out further work on how it can be used in practice. One idea is that it could feed on the dissolved sugars in whey. An article about the research is published in Angewandte Chemie.
On 26 April 2018 the European Commission announced funding for the new project AgriChemWhey. KU Leuven is one of the partners. The project will explore the development of a state-of-the-art, bio-refinery with a world-first process for converting by-products from the dairy industry into high value bio-based products including biodegradable plastics (News Item KU Leuven, 7 may 2018).
