Less food waste in Dutch households

03 July 2017

Dutch people waste less and less food. In 2016, consumers threw away 41 kilograms of food per person, compared to 48 kilograms per person in 2010. Bread and dairy products are thrown away most often. The total amount of food that is wasted in the Dutch food chain has slightly decreased by 3% to 2.55 million tonnes in 2015.
Wageningen Food&Biobased Research has produced the ‘Monitor food waste – Update 2009–2015’ in which the entire food chain was reviewed. For its report ‘Voedselverspilling bij huishoudens in Nederland in 2016’, The Netherlands Nutrition Centre (Voedingscentrum) did research on the behaviour of individual consumers (News Item Government of the Netherlands, 23 May 2017).
