Small but fast: Miniaturized origami-inspired Delta robot

16 February 2018

Delta robots are deployed in many industrial processes, including pick-and-place assemblies and food packaging. Over time, roboticists have designed smaller and smaller Delta robots, yet shrinking them further to the millimeter scale with conventional manufacturing techniques has proven fruitless.
In 2011, inspired by pop-up books and origami, researchers developed a micro-fabrication approach that enables the assembly of robots from flat sheets of composite materials. In their new study, they applied their approach to develop the milliDelta measuring a mere 15 by 15 by 20 mm. An article about the research is published in Science Robotics (News Item Wyss Institute, 17 January 2018).
