Kenya: Agreement on producers PET bottle buy back scheme

01 May 2018

Following implementation of a ban on single-use plastic bags, the Kenyan Ministry of Environment and Forestry turned its attention to disposable PET bottles in its effort to reduce plastic waste and pollution. Under threat of another government ban, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers agreed to implement a scheme to buy back used PET bottles for recycling, according to an announcement by the Ministry.
The scheme will be modeled after one being implemented in South Africa. The bottles will be collected by participants in Kenya’s Youth Empowerment Programme and be temporarily stored in designed facilities prior to recycling (News Item Recycling Laws International, 11 April 2018).
