Characterization and optimization of odors in HDPE recyclates

29 May 2018

Recyclates produced from post-consumer plastic packaging waste must have no off-odors if they are to be used as secondary raw materials for consumer products. Researchers at Fraunhofer have evaluated odors in HDPE waste, regranulates, and virgin HDPE granulates. They used analytical-olfactory methods in order to identify possible formation pathways and sources of the odorants. An article about the research is published in the Journal of Cleaner Production. These studies are the basis for developing targeted optimization and avoidance strategies for off-odors in recyclates. The next step is to test adapted recycling methods for their ability to minimize odors (News Item Fraunhofer).
