Impact level of sustainability of food packaging on perception

04 September 2017

For her Master thesis at Ghent University (UGent) in Belgium, Sofie Hoorens has done research on the impact of the level of sustainability of packaging on the perception of packaged food products. Two variables, ‘Product’ (healthy, unhealthy) and ‘Packaging’ (sustainable, not sustainable), were manipulated in an experiment. Salted potato crisps and vegetable crisps were presented in shiny metallic bags or mat paper bags.
One of the results was the fact that people ate almost double the amount of the salted potato crisps when they were packed in the mat paper bags compared to the same crisps packed in the shiny metallic bags or the vegetable crisps in general.
