Forensic analysis of counterfeit pharmaceutical packaging

21 April 2017

Pharmaceutical packaging is the coordinated system that encloses and protects a dosage form. Counterfeit drugs have caused deaths, and lead to the failure of public trust in the healthcare system and pharmaceutical manufacturers. The authentication of packaging materials requires a trained forensic approach.
This thesis gives an overview of various technologies that can be used to analyse packaging materials to determine whether they are counterfeit. The techniques range from advanced instrumentation, for example with hyper- and multi-spectral techniques, and multivariate data interpretation, to rapid screening methods of suspect materials (University of Kent, January 2017).
