BE: New packaging plan announced

02 July 2018

Flemish minister Joke Schauvliege has announced her packaging plan. The plan consists of 6 main pillars: 1) Avoiding the unnecessary use of packaging; 2) Packaging that cannot be avoided should be made as environmentally friendly as possible; 3) Aim for recycling as much as possible; 4) Avoid litter and strengthen enforcement of litter prevention; 5) The polluter pays: Whoever puts packaging on the market, uses, disposes or leaves packaging behind needs to pay for the costs of processing the waste and 6) The system needs to be simple and decisive. Deposits on cans and PET bottles or another reward system are also part of the Minister’s plans (News Item CD&V, 21 May 2018).
