BE: Need for standardisation glass bottles with deposit fee

05 June 2018

The Belgian deposit fee system for glass bottles is a good system to get reusable glass bottles back to the producer. However, for commercial reasons producers are bringing more and more bottles and crates to the market with unique features, which makes the return logistics very complex and costly. Increased standardisation could offer a solution. That is shown by the project results of ‘Empty Logistics’.
Sorting the bottles continues to be the biggest difficulty of the deposit fee system. Particularly the points of sale have a lot of sorting work because of the large diversity of bottle types. Sorting is a manual, time-consuming and error-prone task (Press Release VIL, 23 May 2018).
