Differences in language versions Directives and Regulations

20 December 2016

It can happen that there are differences between the language versions of European Directives and Regulations, like the Food Labelling Directive. How should the industry deal with this? The European Court of Justice has answered this question again in a recent Judgement.
In this judgement the Court repeats the settled law for this point: European Union law should be explained according to the true intention of its author and the goal that is pursued. When there are differences between the language versions, the provision concerned should be interpreted with due regard for the general intention and the goal of the legislation it is part of (VMT, 22 November 2016).
