Battle for the senior starts in supermarkets

20 December 2016

The expenditure of seniors in supermarkets is expected to rise to 10.5 billion euro in the next 5 years. That is an increase of almost 20%. This growth is partially caused by the increase in the number of seniors, and partially by the growth in expenditure per senior. Therefore, the 65+ turnover is growing faster than the total supermarket turnover. The impact of the aging population on supermarkets is big. Supermarkets can strengthen their position in the battle for the senior by improving their assortment and service.
One of the ways to anticipate the needs of seniors is to offer smaller packs and portions in product groups that are popular with seniors (News Item ING, 22 November 2016).
