Industry 4.0, blockchain and AI

Together with industry players and financial institutions, ABN AMRO is exploring the options to launch Forcefield, a digital blockchain platform that can provide real-time insight into trade inventories. The platform can communicate with physical trade inventories through the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors and Near Field Communication (NFC) chips.
OECD and partner countries have formally adopted the first set of intergovernmental policy guidelines on Artificial Intelligence (AI), agreeing to uphold international standards that aim to ensure AI systems are designed to be robust, safe, fair and trustworthy.
Industry 4.0 integrates people and digitally controlled machines with the Internet and information technologies. What is the impact on the food industry? Will food security benefit? These and other questions are answered in articles published within the framework of the monograph Food Safety and Industry 4.0 (3.2 MB), which is the result of the International Conference on Production Management and Packaging.

3D printing, robots and other production issues
3D printing in the industry is an expertise that is becoming increasingly important. A survey by Agoria (in Dutch), Sirris and PwC shows that half of the Belgian companies using Additive Manufacturing (AM) expect turnover to grow by more than 10% over the next 5 years. The recently published PMMI 2019 Vision 2025 ProFood Tech focuses on the impact of and solutions for mass customisation in food and beverage processing, e.g. raw materials procurement, new product formulations and more. You can download the report after filling in your e-mail address.
The PMMI Top to Top Summit 2019 Report contains summit observations and conclusions that can help packaging machinery end-users/customers and manufacturers/producers to identify and address operational issues in a manner that improves all facets of packaging machinery procurement and operational processes. You can download the report after filling in your e-mail address.
In the NL industry, the number of robots has increased fivefold over the past ten years. By the end of 2019 there are expected to be approximately 12,000 industrial robots. What is worrying is that the rate of growth is slowing down. Acceleration and better application of robotics is a must in view of the necessary future productivity growth and economic growth. This is what ING (in Dutch) research has shown.
KU Leuven (in Dutch) has announced that the new lab for logistics technology L-iTL was inaugurated on 6 June 2019. In the new test and demo lab, engineers will further develop concepts for optimising the storage, packaging, supply and transport of products.

Top 100 Logistics Service Providers 2019
DHL is again ranked first in the 2019 list of Top 100 Logistics Service Providers. This is the result of research that Logistiek.nl (in Dutch) carries out together with Buck Consultants International on an annual basis. You can receive the white paper and the poster of the Top 100 by e-mail after filling in your details (in Dutch).

Papermaking - From manufacturing in lab to industrial production
Papermaking is about large volumes. The step from manufacturing in lab to industrial production therefore faces great challenges. You don't want to build a factory until you know that everything works. Pilot facilities are a good way to bridge this gap. But even here, it can be difficult if the amount of pulp to be tested is small. At RISE, researchers have now found a way forward through so-called pulse production.
