FINAT statistics show that in the first half of 2022, EU self-adhesive label demand decreased by 2% compared to the same period in 2021. The decrease came after an increase of 7% for the year 2021 and an increase of 4.3% in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic struck Europe.
According to a recent report by Fortune Business Insights, the global cold chain packaging market is projected to grow from $22.97 billion in 2022 to $47.46 billion by 2029, at a CAGR of 10.9%. You can find more information in the report summary.

The international ambitions of Dutch agrologistics companies
WUR has published a sector study (2.49 MB) that provides insight into the agrologistics ecosystem in the Netherlands and the international ambitions of Dutch companies that provide technology, products, and services to customers active in the operational parts of agro chains. The segments include sorting and packaging technology and packaging materials.

Packaging and sustainability
A new Smithers report maps out the 10-year strategic journey to more sustainability in packaging. An infographic that you can download after filling in your details gives a forecast of sustainable packaging to 2032.
Mintel’s 2022 Sustainability Barometer shows that plastic pollution is one of the top three environmental concerns for consumers worldwide (33%). Recycling packaging remains the top sustainable behaviour (59% in 2022 v 60% in 2021). You can download an executive summary after filling in your details.
Shorr surveyed 1,113 US consumers for The 2022 Sustainable Packaging Consumer Report and found that 86% are more likely to purchase a product if the packaging is considered sustainable.
For her thesis (1.21 MB) at the University of Groningen, commissioned by KIDV, Esther Daams studied the influence of packaging and webshop cues for the sustainability of the packaging on the purchasing behaviour of consumers.

Consumer behaviour: luxury, beauty and personal care packaging
For their thesis (5.95 MB) at Politecnico di Torino, Celia Babic and Henri Charpin studied packaging for luxury products in the light of the new environmental and social awareness of consumers. In particular, they focussed on champagne and spirits packaging.
In an article (1.55 MB) published in SSRN, Penn researchers outline trends, best practices and opportunities for sustainable packaging in the beauty and personal care industry.
A University of Zagreb study (1.57 MB) on the design of sustainable packaging for natural cosmetics is published in the Journal of Applied Packaging Research. The results show that the perception of the product’s naturalness and environmental friendliness is influenced more by the packaging material than by the pictorial elements and colour.
