According to a whitepaper (69 kB) published by Evergreen Packaging, grocery shoppers in 2018 have greater expectations of packaging than ever before. The study sums up the challenges.
Unit pricing is a way for retailers to show the price of a commodity in relation to a standard unit of measure, such as the kg. However, this is not always consistent across retailers or products. A new ISO standard will help consumers compare products. More information about purchasing ISO 21041:2018 can be found here.
Researchers at Michigan State University studied whether visual distracters extend the time children take to open child resistant vials. An article (901 kB) about the research is published in PLOS one.

Consumers and the environment

Researchers at Karlstad University have investigated how the packaging design affects sorting. They found that the decision between throwing out or recycling was surprisingly complex. Time plays a big role. An article (1.29 MB) about the research is published in Sustainability. Research commissioned by SUEZ (in Dutch) shows that Dutch people find separating waste important, but also difficult. Although three quarters think they separate their waste in the right way, the right knowledge sometimes seems to be lacking. Research by PanelWizard (in Dutch) for ABN AMRO shows that 75% of the Dutch have never heard of the circular economy. Moreover, only 9% say they know exactly what this term means. Market for packaging machinery and robots
A new report by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) shows that 381,000 units were shipped globally in 2017 (+30% compared to 2016). You can download the executive summary of the report here (332 kB).
According to Ucima, the Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association, turnover is expected to grow by 6.8% to 7.7 billion euros in 2018. According to Acimga (15 kB), in 2018 revenues for the Italian industry of printing and converting machinery have grown by 10% to €3 billion.

Market for (bio)plastics, inks, dispensers and personal care industry
European Bioplastics’ annual market report (2.59 MB) predicts the global bioplastics market to grow by roughly 25% over the next 5 years. Packaging remains the largest field of application with almost 65% (1.2 million tonnes) of the total bioplastics market in 2018. According to current data, the Plastics Packaging Industry Association (IK) is expecting a 5.1% increase in sales for German production in 2018 and a 3.9% increase in volume.
