Packaging - Market information and trends
A new research report (2.79 MB) from Accenture Industry X and AIPIA shows the rise of smart connected packaging. Smart connected packaging means digital-enabled containers and labels that drive information to customers to enrich the product experience and pull data back that companies can use in product development and manufacturing.
AEROBAL (International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers) reports that global shipments by its members declined by 1.2% in 2021 to around 5.6 billion units.
According to Smithers, the global market for functional additives and barrier coatings for plastic packaging will be worth $5.14 billion in 2027. You can find more information in a recent article and you can download an infographic after filling in your details.
The latest Intellectual Property Crime Threat Assessment (2.45 MB), produced by Europol and EUIPO, reveals that the distribution of counterfeit goods increased during the pandemic. In 2019, packaging materials were the third most frequently encountered counterfeit articles seized at the EU’s external border. In 2020 it was the top category.

Market for digital printing
According to Smithers, the digital printing market will be worth $136.7 billion in 2022. A forecast CAGR of 5.7% will push the total value to $230.5 billion in 2032. The most lucrative print market will be in packaging, commercial print, and book printing. Consumers and pharmaceutical packaging
Researchers at Biruni University used eye tracking technique to evaluate pharmaceutical packaging pictograms. Participants were asked what they understood from the pictograms and their eye movements were examined to determine the most suitable location of the pictograms on the packaging. Consumers and sustainability
SWOCC (in Dutch) reports on ASCoR research that shows that products with an implicit cue, such as packaging material with a natural look and feel, are seen as more sustainable. Products with an explicit cue, such as a sustainability label, are also seen as more sustainable. An article (2.04 MB) about the research is published in the Journal of Food Products Marketing.
KIDV has published a so-called Sustainable Consumer Behaviour Tool. It is a set of three tools that companies - particularly in the food packaging sector - can use to look at sustainable packaging from the consumers' perspective.
University of Georgia research finds that plastic shopping bag bans may drive the sales of small plastic garbage bags. That’s because shopping bags often find a second use as liners for small trash cans. An article (abstract) about the research is published in Environmental and Resource Economics.

Prices for plastics
Dutch trade magazine Vraag en Aanbod publishes a weekly overview of the prices for plastics (in Dutch). The prices given are estimated averages between the gross prices published in the trade journals and the net prices.
