ISO: Testing child resistance of reclosable packaging

21 January 2016

A significant number of suspected cases of ingestion by children of products used about the home is reported to the medical profession each year. Child-resistant packaging can be used to put a physical barrier between the child and the hazardous product.
In December 2015 NEN-EN-ISO 8317 (3rd edition) was published. The standard specifies requirements and test methods for child resistant reclosable packages. Acceptance criteria are given for the packages when tested by specified methods. These methods also cover the accessibility to the contents by adults. Testing is carried out with two panels of people: young children and adults (World Packaging Standardisation Newsletter, January 2016).
