EFSA Panel rejects proposed process for recycling PET bottles

11 January 2016

EFSA’s CEF Panel issued a scientific opinion on a proposed PET recycling process developed by Slovakian PET bottle recycler General Plastic.
The process uses hot caustic washed flakes from PET bottles to make recycled PET for food contact applications. The process allows up to 5% of the waste PET bottles to come from non-food applications.
However, after reviewing information submitted from the PET processor, the panel concluded that the applicant has not demonstrated that the recycling process 'General Plastic' is able to reduce any contamination of the plastic input to a concentration that does not pose a risk to human health (Recycling Laws International, 7 December 2015).
