Global production capacity bio-based plastic to triple by 2020

12 January 2016

The worldwide production capacity of bio-based polymers will triple from 5.7 million tonnes in 2014 to nearly 17 million tonnes in 2020. Market survey data show a 10% growth rate from 2012 to 2013 and even 11% from 2013 to 2014. However, growth rate is expected to decrease in 2015.
The production capacity shows a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 10%. The 5.7 million tonnes production capacity represents approximately a 2% share of overall structural polymer production. With an expected total polymer production of about 400 million tonnes in 2020, the bio-based share should increase from 2% in 2013 to more than 4% in 2020 (Press Release nova-Institute, 11 November 2015).
