Fighting food waste with better packaging

25 August 2016

The debate on the role of packaging in fighting food waste intensifies and 4 recent publications add insights. Americans take notice of increasingly strained global food resources and Mintel reveals that 80% of US food shoppers agree that reducing food waste is as important as reducing packaging waste. The Economist reports that one-third of the American adults is not just overweight, but obese. Packaging may play a crucial role in this phenomenon as well. An 18-page study by ABN AMRO outlines the positive opportunities for supermarkets in addressing food waste in their corporate policy. In Belgium a project has started to reduce the amount of food waste via better packaging and logistics.
