US House Bill on ingredients labeling for cleaning products

31 May 2016

United States H.R.5205, introduced on May 12 by Representative Steve Israel, does not restrict any chemicals in cleaning products. Instead, it would require cleaning product manufacturers to display a list of chemical ingredients (including the CAS Registry Number) and explanations of each ingredient’s purpose for being in the cleaning product on their product containers or packaging.
All information would need to be presented in English and Spanish. If the manufacturer has a website, some of the required information would be placed there. The bill authorizes the Consumer Product Safety Commission to promulgate needed rules to implement the Act (State Recycling Laws Update, 23 May 2016).
