US: Evaluation of technologies for mixed waste processing

20 June 2016

A report released by the American Chemistry Council finds the main technologies used in modern recycling plants, also known as materials recovery facilities (MRFs), are being successfully integrated into mixed waste processing facilities (MWPFs). MRFs and MWPFs differ in that the former require recyclable materials to be removed from the waste stream in order to be processed while MWPFs extract recyclables directly from municipal solid waste. The report examines ten types of equipment, such as optical sorting systems; bag openers, which liberate materials from closed plastic trash bags; air separation systems and densifiers (Press Release American Chemistry Council, 31 May 2016).
