UK: Draft Regulations lower packaging recycling targets

26 May 2016

The United Kingdom has sent draft regulations to the European Commission amending Schedule 2 of the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 concerning recovery and recycling targets. The standstill period ends on 5 August 2016.
The changes are to introduce new recovery and recycling targets for plastic for 2016-2020 and for glass for 2018-20. These Regulations will come into force on 1st August 2016. The recycling target plastic packaging for 2016, previously set at 52%, is being reduced to 49%. Then it will increase 2% per year to 57% in 2020. The 2016 and 2017 glass packaging targets remain at 77%, then increase 1% annually to 80% in 2020.
