UK: Plastic bottle and coffee cup waste inquiry launched

31 March 2017

An inquiry has been launched into the damage being done to the environment by disposable drinks packaging, focussing on the impact of plastic bottles and coffee cups. The inquiry will look at what actions are being undertaken by industry and Government and investigate possible solutions.
Only 23% of the 2.2 million tonnes of plastic used in the UK in 2014 was recycled. Plastic bottles and coffee cups are particularly problematic. Only around half of the 35 million plastic bottles sold every day are currently collected for recycling. And every day around 7 million cardboard coffee cups are thrown away, but only 1 in 400 are recycled (News Item UK Parliament, 4 March 2017).
