NL: Trend continues - More sustainable food purchased in 2016

30 October 2017

For the seventh consecutive year the Monitor Sustainable Food shows that Dutch consumers more often choose food that has been produced in an environmentally and/or animal friendly way. In 2016 3,8 billion euro was spent on these products: an increase of 26% compared to the year before. The market share increased from 8% to 10%. In 2010 the market share was a mere 3.5%.
The growth was the highest in the supermarkets (36%) and the ‘on-the-go’ points of sale (42%) – such as airfields, train stations and petrol stations. The Monitor Sustainable Food is performed annually by Wageningen Economic Research (News Item Government of the Netherlands, 3 October 2017).
