NL: WUR report on facts biobased and biodegradable plastics

11 May 2017

Biobased plastics can be mechanically recycled just like conventional plastics and biodegradable plastics are not a solution to the plastic soup in the oceans. These are two key findings in the report ‘Biobased and biodegradable plastics – Facts and Figures’. The report takes stock of scientific knowledge and focuses on the biobased and biodegradable plastics used in the packaging industry.
The lack of clarity is partly due to terminology. ‘Bioplastic’, for instance, normally refers to plastics made mostly from plant biomass, but has also been used as a synonym for biodegradable plastic. These are, however, two completely separate characteristics (News Item WUR, 20 April 2017).
