NL: Online shopping becomes more popular

04 April 2016

In the coming years the consumer will start to do his weekly shopping online a lot more often. Analysts of ABN AMRO expect the internet share in the turnover of supermarkets to grow from 1.6% now to 9% in 2025.
At the same time physical supermarkets change. The larger ones become experience shops: with a larger share of fresh products, more information about products and a more personal approach. The analysts foresee an increase in the amount of small supermarkets in cities, directed to the convenience consumer and the daily groceries. Of all purchases made by consumers, at the moment about 17% is done online. That market share will grow to 33% in 2025 (News Item ABN AMRO, 4 March 2016).
