NL: Item about ban on free plastic bags on 8 o’clock news

29 February 2016

On 20 February 2016 the Dutch Broadcast Foundation (NOS) featured an item in the 8 o’clock news about the ban of free plastic bags. For 7 retail chains the decline since 1 January 2016 is given.
A wholesaler in packaging materials is interviewed. He sees quite a decline (around 25%) in the number of plastic bags he sells. On the other hand he sees a growth of 20% in the sales of paper carrier bags. Linda Nijenhuis of Milieu Centraal was also interviewed. People have the idea that paper is more environmentally friendly than plastic. This is not the case, according to her. “If you look at all the environmental factors then a paper carrier bag is usually less environmentally friendly.”
