Packaging solutions – McKinsey report on the sector
McKinsey has performed an in-depth assessment of the packaging solutions sector. The report (10.04 MB) includes an overview of its performance over the last 15 years, the shifting dynamics affecting the sector’s future, and the steps that companies should take.

Labels, digital printing, flexible packaging and smart packaging
FINAT’s latest edition of its 6-monthly market monitor shows signs of a cooling label market. Data can be found in a recently published article. An online-readable supplement of Packaging World provides insights on digital printing for labels and packaging.

Packaging for nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals
A new report from PMMI takes an in-depth look at packaging for nutraceuticals. Makers are moving away from rigid plastic and glass containers in favour of portable stick packs and flexible pouches. You can download the executive summary after filling in your e-mail address.

The SFK (in Dutch) reports that in 2018 NL pharmacies dispensed a total of 232 million prescription-only medicines. This required 246 million trade packs, corresponding to an average of 1.06 packs per dispensation.

Fruit and vegetables
Researchers at Brigham Young University and Delft University of Technology studied how the backgrounds of grocery store displays impact the attractiveness of vegetables. They found the best bet is to go back in black. An article (1.96 MB) about the research is published in Food Quality and Preference. For her thesis (2.77 MB) at Chulalongkorn University, Parinyaporn Sangsuk studied consumer’s perceptions toward packaging design of ready-to-drink vegetable and fruit juice.

Logos and ethical claims
Locally sourced, sustainably produced, or made with love – claims on labels that speak to our ethical side have grown astronomically in recent years. How do we know which claims are true, and what they really mean? ISO has published ISO/TS 17033 to help make things clearer. It sets out internationally agreed ways to make a credible ethical claim. The KIDV (in Dutch) has published a factsheet (in Dutch, 773 kB) with an overview of logos that consumers can find on packaging, their origin and meaning, whether their use is mandatory or voluntary, and how 'official' they are.

Packaging and the environment
The Retail Institute (part of Leeds Beckett University), has published a research report (2.02 MB) entitled “Generation Z & Consumers Trends in Environmental Packaging”.
