LT: Draft legislation to ban single-use plastic bags

07 March 2016

Draft legislation, introduced in the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) in February 2016, would ban the free distribution of single-use plastic bags (less than 50 microns thick). The bill permits the distribution of “aerobically biodegradable plastic shopping bags” and thicker, reusable plastic bags.
The regulations will bring Lithuania into compliance with recent amendments to the EU Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste. The amendments require all EU Member States to either end lightweight plastic carrier bag distribution by 31 December 2018 or reduce per capita consumption to 90 bags by the end of 2019 and 45 bags by the end of 2025 (Recycling Laws International, 26 February 2016).
