IT: Draft decree banning single-use plastic bags sent to EC

19 December 2016

Italy has sent a draft decree to the EU Commission concerning restrictions on the use of plastic bags. The standstill period ends on 20 February 2017. Without limitation to the marketing of biodegradable and compostable plastic bags, the marketing of plastic carrier bags made from lightweight material is prohibited, as well as other plastic bags not meeting a number of given characteristics.
The progressive reduction of plastic carrier bags in ultra-lightweight material takes place in the following manner: from 1 January 2018, only biodegradable and compostable carrier bags with a minimum renewable raw material content of 40% can be marketed, from 1 January 2020 50% and from 1 January 2021 60%.
