DE: Regulations packaging and environment changes proposed

19 September 2016

Germany’s Umwelt Bundesamt (UBA) has proposed changes to the Packaging Ordinance to encourage better packaging eco-design and reduce packaging waste generation. Producer compliance fees would be set, based on the amount of packaging producers help recycle.
Establishing a Central Office for packaging producers is proposed. Packaging producers would need to submit declarations to the Central Office each June 1 on the amounts and types of packaging they place in the market. The following packaging material recycling targets (by weight) are proposed: 90% for glass, paper, plastics and metals and 80% for composite packaging (Recycling Laws International, 5 September 2016).
