Bioplastics and food packaging: a review

In an article researchers at the Department of Food Engineering & Technology, SLIET in India give a review about the development and application of bioplastics for food packaging.
They state that it is clear that bio-based packaging materials offer a versatile potential for the packaging industry however, there is need of certain storage tests to be performed on packaging machinery in order to certify the use of these packaging films on a commercial scale. Critical evaluation is required to access the functionality of bio-based packaging materials before they are launched into the market as substitutes for conventional packaging materials.
