Comprehension of symbols on medical device packaging

Symbols are touted as an effective means of communication because of their high visual impact, ability to transcend language and the fact that they frequently save space. These qualities are particularly important when communicating information that is required for the safe and effective use of products, such as drugs and medical devices. This study explores the validity of the assertion that the symbols will be understood. The specific objective was to assess whether people in the US in perioperative roles accurately interpret the meaning of stand-alone symbols from an internationally recognized standard of symbols for medical devices (Packaging Technology and Science, 14 April 2016).
