BE: Market survey on photoinitiators in food products

17 March 2016

A Belgian research team developed a fast and reliable confirmation method for the determination of 17 photoinitiators in dry foodstuffs and applied it for an evaluation of photoinitiator occurrence in food products of the Belgian market. The market survey focused on 49 cereals, 10 bread crumbs, 15 pasta and 23 rice samples. Only food items packaged in board, and without a functional barrier such as aluminium, were selected for the study. In 86 out of 97 samples measurable photoinitiator quantities were found. Benzophenone (BP), 4-(dimethylamino)benzophenone (DMPA), and ethyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDMAB) were frequently found (Newsletter IBE-BVI, February 2016).
